Description
The Thame to Aylesbury turnpike was set up in 1770. The road from Aylesbury via Wing to Hockliffe (Beds) was turnpiked in 1810. In 1833 an additional road was approved from Thame via Long Cre ndon to the junction with the Bicester Road (A41) at Blackthorn.
Sand, gravel and stones for repairing the Aylesbury to Hockliffe road were largely available locally, with flints coming from elsewhere. There was a gate SW of Aylesbury (SP 809132 approx) where in 1823 there was a weighing machine. In 1814 a weighing engine was erected at the gate NE of Aylesbury at the junction with Broughton Lane. There was a gate at Wing, on the Linslade parish boundary (now the county boundary) at SP 896147. 'Tollgate House', shown on the 1982 OS 1:10,000 map, is a modern building. (B1)
