Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century cast iron milepost on A418 in Wing on Aylesbury Road in brambles before the village. National ID number BU_AYLB07 on Milestones Society website in 2010 on Aylesbury to Leighton Buzzard route. Recorded as present in 2004. On north side of road 83cm high , 51cm wide, 28cm deep. Inscription: top: WING : left: LEIGHTON 3 1/2 : right: AYLESBURY 7. [ Photograph, detailed description and location available ] (B1).
Confirmed by handwritten notes on OS 1'' map (1835) was in Bucks County Museum now in Centre for Bucks Studies. Museum number 24 sheet XXIV on page 2 of notes. Inscription: Aylesbury 7 Leighton Buzzard 3 1/2. On N.Wing to Aylesbury (N1 ) route.In same notes under " N1. Milestones on Ground" . No NGR or parish recorded. Number on 1" OS 1835 7. In same notes under N in a red box. Milestones 1810 50 Geo. III. C. 74. Road to be measured and MSs to be set up. (Ayl. - Hockliff ). In pencil ( ? TMs ). Blue Folder 1 underlined in red. 1821 MPs to be set up_ Ayl. (Black Swan) to West Chester Road. Blue Folder 1 Underlined in red. " 1820s or 1830s" Cast iron MPs, made by Seymour, Aylesbury and " probably made 18202 or 1830s". " Renewal Act of 1791 made maention of provision of MPs" [ Ayl. - Shillingford, Oxon. ] In pencil ? Local resident cleared brambles from the milepost in 2016.
