Description

Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century cast iron milepost on grass verge on A418 in Bierton village just before Pecks Farm Close. National ID number BU_AYLB02 on Aylesbury to Leighton Buzzard route on Milestones Society website in 2010. Recorded as present in 2003. On north side of road 80cm high 22cm deep,42cm wide. Inscription: top: BIERTON : left: LEIGHTON 81/2 HOCKLIFFE 12: right: AYLESBU(RY) 2. [Photograph, detailed description and location available ] (B1).
Confirmed by handwritten notes on microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814 ) and OS 1" (1835 ) were in Bucks County Musuem now in Centre for Bucks Studies.Museum number 29 sheet XXIX page 3 of notes. Inscription: Aylesbury 2 LB 81/2. On current OS. On Aylesbury to L Buzzard (N1) route. In same notes under " N1. Milestones on Ground". NGR 843 158. Parish Bierton. Number on 1" OS 1835 2. In same notes under N in red box. 1810 50 Geo. III c. 74 Road to be measured and MSs to be set up. ( Ayl - Hockliffe ) ( ? TMs ) in pencil. Blue Folder 1 underlined in red.1821 MPs to be set up - Ayl. ( Black Swan to West Chester Road. Blue Folder 1 underlined in red. " 1820s or 1830s" Cast iron MPs, made by Seymour, Aylesbury, and "probably made 1820s or 1830s."" Renewal Act of 1791 made mention of provision of MPs" { Ayl. - Shillingford, Oxon ]. In pencil ? According to Peter Gullands extensive study The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties 2017.This is on The Aylesbury Hockliffe Turnpike Road p.265. It was 14 miles long 8 and a half miles in Buckinghamshire now mostly the A418. From the juction of New Street Aylesbury to Leighton Road Hockliffe. During WW2 milemarkers rthroughout county buried or rmoved for secuity reasons sometimes not back correctly. After trusts closed in 18800s to 1890s Bucks replaced missing milemakers on someroads with what Milstones Society calls Bucks Pressings metal with 2 white fadeec and black painrt writing.
