Description
IRON AGE CAMP DEFENDED BY SINGLE BANK & DITCH EXCEPT ON NE WHERE ENTRANCE EVIDENTLY WAS, & THERE ARE 3 BANKS & DITCHES. BANK TO NW RISES 5-6M ABOVE DITCH. E HALF IS CULTIVATED & BANK REDUCED TO C.1M BY PLOUGHING. ON S THE GROUND FALLS STEEPLY & THERE IS A SCARP ONLY (B1-5).
CHALK PITS IN N (B4).
1895 PLAN (B16).
Programme of geophysical survey, topographic survey and dowsing carried out by Archaeology in Marlow from March 2005 to May 2008. 3 profiles across the ramparts and detailed topographic and contour surveys of two areas of the ramparts were carried out. A series of geophysical surveys in the fields within the eastern half of the hillfort failed to identify any traces of internal settlement, although a couple of magnetic anomalies were tentaively interpreted as a possible banjo enclosure [CAS 01168:03]. See reports for detail (B18-19)
(SU 807 847) Camp (NR) (B24)
(SU 807 847) Contour Camp, NE of the church and SW of States House enclosing an area of nearly 17 acres. The defences consist of a single rampart and ditch, except about 100yds on the west side where there is an outer bank. The east side has been much reduced by the plough ... One original entrance appears to have been on the NW; and on the SW a path, apparently ancient and protected by a bank, leads towards a spring." (B2)
Date, about 2nd century BC (B25).
IA fort: surveyed at 1:2500. (B26)
A much-reduced, IA univallate fort measuring internally approximately 330.0m N-S by 250.0m E-W, situated mainly in woodland, partly in pasture on the end of a ridge with steep slopes to the south and west. The enclosing bank and ditch have been reduced in places to a mere outward-facing scarp, but where best preserved at SU 8055 8475 the rampart is 0.8m above the interior ground level and an outer counterscarp bank is in evidence. (See section). The entrance is in the NW corner, but later ornamental paths and quarrying have obliterated surface details. Apparent outer defence at the entrance is probably the result of landscaping. Published survey (25") revised (B27).
SU 807 847. States House. Listed in gazetteer as a univallate hillfort covering 6.6ha. (B28)
The Iron Age fort described above has been mapped from aerial photographs. (Morph No. TG.503.1.1) (B29).
NRHE Insert 1997, Update 1999, 2011 (B23).
