Description

[CITING RAWLINSON MS B.263mp359, BODLEIAN LIBRARY] IN A VALE BETWEEN THE 2 CAMPS OF MEDMENHAM IS A DOWN CALLED BURY DOWN WHERE BONES ARE FOUND & ARMOUR HATH BEEN PLOWED UP, PARTICULARLY WHERE THE CASTLE STOOD & SEVERAL PAVEMENTS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED. NOW A PLANTATION CALLED BURY DENE, N OF THE MARLOW ROAD (B14).

Plaisted, writing of the two Medmenham hillforts (SU 88 SW : 15 & 16) quotes informatioon derived from David Dicconson, vicar of Medmenham (1690-1716) as saying "In a vale between them is a down called Bury Down, where bones are found and armour hath been ploughed up, particularly in the Field where the Castle (SU 88 SW 17) stood, and several sorts of pavement have been discovered" (B30)

Bury Down is now a plantation above the meadow north of the road to Marlow, extending up to the Hermitage Plot, and is known as Bury Dene. (B6)

No further information regarding the location of the finds, and no further discoveries made. (B27)
