Description

1814 & 1825 maps mark 'Long Wick Mill' approx at NGR (B3-4).
Posse Comitatus: watermill (T Grace)(B2).
'Longwick Mill (Ccorn)' shown at NGR (B6).
Mill held C17 by William Hampden perhaps on site of 1 of 2 Domesday mills in Princes Risborough (Longwick was part of Princes Risborough)(B7) .
Sunfire refs to mill 1719, 1743 (burnt), 1766, 1807 (B9).
An archaeological watching brief carried out by John Moore Heritage Services during groundworks for refurbishments and new buildings identified a number of undated structural remains to the northeast, northwest and east of the existing buildings and on different alignments to them. It is suggested that some or all of these remains may pre-date the 18th century mill buildings. Two structures were brick built, one was stone faced and another building had chalk block footings with flint core. Within the millhouse an east-west wall, with chalk block foundations and chalk rubble core; a ?later clay/cob foundation possibly supporting a timber partition and door posts; and at least 2 mortar floors were identified overlain by clay layers dated to the 18th and 19th centuries. A single sherd of late 11th century pottery was recovered from the chalk block foundation. Whilst the pottery is believed to be residual, it is just possible that the wall was associated with the Domesday mill (B15).
Detailed historical notes and 1930s condition. Reported to be working in 2006 (B16)
