Description
An area of silts recorded during a watching brief carried out by John Moore Heritage Services from January to September 2002 on new garage footings to the north-west of the mill buildings was interpreted as a former mill pond, possibly a reserve pond for times of low flow of the millstream. The pond was over 1.2m deep and lined with dark blue clay. A ditch, 2.2m wide and approx 0.5m deep, cut into the edge of the pond may have been intended to help drain the area after the pond had silted up. A possible N-S outflow leat, over 0.75m deep, to the south of the former pond was recorded during stripping for a new access road; the leat appears to have been deliberately backfilled. The former overflow leat from the main millstream (shown on 19th and 20th century OS maps) was also recorded to the south of the mill buildings, 5m wide and 1.9-2.1m deep, it had been recently backfilled (B15). NGR to former pond.
