Description

BARN, ATTACHED TO RIGHT OF MILL. BRICK GROUND FLOOR WALLS & TIMBER FRAMED, WEATHERBOARDED UPPER STOREY. SET BACK. 2 STOREYS & 5 BAYS. IRREGULAR BOARD DOORS & WINDOWS, C20 HOPPERS TO FRONT. ROOF HAS QUEEN STRUT TRUSSES & CURVED BRACES TO TIE BEAMS (B13).
PERHAPS ORIGINALLY DRYING HOUSE OF PAPER MILL (B12).
Building recording carried out by Oxford Archaeology indicated that the first floor timber-framed structure had probably been reused from a previous (probably 17th century) building, and had been added onto the 18th century brick ground floor walls, probably in the 19th century. The wheel house formerly housing the water wheel originally occupied the northern part of the barn at ground floor, whilst the southern part was believed to have been used as stables (B14).
A watching brief during groundworks carried out by John Moore Heritage Services confirmed the position of an external extension which had been demolished prior to the building recording and watching brief commencing (B15).
