Description

(A: SU 93467748; 'B' SU 93517745) Two circular crop marks and possible pits and ditches visible on APs (No significant features visible on RCHM AP) (B19 ,20)

No trace of any of the crop marks on a level gravel flood-plain at present under crop.

Examination of St Joseph Aps indicate a ring ditch 'A' about 20.2m in diameter, with two dark stains, possibly burials, in the enclosed area. 'B' is a ring ditch about 25.0m in diameter, with a break in the perimeter ditch on the south side. A linear ditch bisects 'B'. The marks to the N of the ring ditches centred SU 935775 appear to be natural pockets of darker soil in the gravel. Plotted from Aps (B21).

9377 SU 97 NW Area centred SU 934775 DORNEY Circle with internal pit. Circle with entrance on S side crossed by linear feature. Linear feature to NE. ST JOSEPH 57 VF 62, VP 1-3; 59 YO 33 (B16).

The cropmarks referred to by the previous authority comprise a Bronze Age barrow cemetery, consisting of four round barrows, which is visible as cropmarks and has been mapped from aerial photographs. The barrows are all defined by subcircular ditched enclosures, one of which has a central pit. They are centred at SU 9347 7748,
SU 9352 7745, SU 9354 7755 and SU 9357 7754 and measure 20m, 20m, 12m and 10m in diameter, respectively. (Morph No. TG.558.1.1-4)

A number of ditched boundaries, of uncertain date, are visible running amongst and through the barrows. It is unclear what, if any, there relationship is to the barrows. (Morph No. TG.558.2.1-3.1)

One of the barrows has been excavated and the report from the excavation shows a fifth barrow to the right of the northernmost pair at approximately SU 9360 7753 (see Event 655974, Eton College Rowing Course, Dorney).

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database (B22).
