Description

AREA OF HOUSE PLATFORMS, HOLLOW WAYS &C, BOUNDED BY RIDGE & FURROW, ON BOTH SIDES OF B4034 ROAD; SEEN ON AP (B5).
AREA CENTRED AT NGR; SEE CAS RECORD MAP)(B5,B8).
PART OF SITE DAMAGED BY ROADWORKS, (B10, B13); OTHER AREAS PLOUGHED (& PARTLY FIELDWALKED) (B11, &C).

A shrunken village medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located around the site of Manor Farm, Bourton, Buckingham, and centred at SP 70921 33366. The earthworks of the shrunken settlement extend further to the north and east than was currently recorded and the western area, south of Bourton Road, has been redeveloped in the 1980s and the earthworks here were mainly trackways, some ridge and furrow and field/plot boundaries. A subcircular earthwork may be the remains of a dovecote. To the east of these, towards Manor Farm, the earthworks of a large area of uneven ground, which may be a former extractive pit, is visible up to the edge of a trackway, shown on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map, which run north-south from Bourton Road and was still visible as a hedge lined trackway on the 1940s aerial photographs. This has been affected by the construction of the modern road (A413) and lidar visualisations appear to show any earthworks in this field have been infilled when the cutting was made. South of Rose Cottage (Listed) and Bourton Road further earthworks of former plot boundaries, ridge and furrow and platforms are visible.
On the north side of Bourton road, on the west side of the barn yard, linear earthworks were visible in the 1940s; this is a recreation ground on modern aerial photographs and there are no earthworks visible on lidar visualisations. To the east of the barn yard, in an area of uneven ground, are remains of a probable trackway and plot boundaries and platforms, and a probable extractive pit. To the east of this is a trackway, visible as parallel ditches, around an area of small rectilinear fields of inclosed ridge and furrow earthworks to the north of the farm house and farm buildings at Manor Farm. The whole of these earthworks are within extensive ridge and furrow field systems and trackways/furlong boundaries to the east of Buckingham. (19-26)
