Plan Form - SUBRECTANGULAR
MANSION BUILT C.1566, PART DEMOLISHED 1738-43 (B8).
E WING OF THE FORTESCUE MANSION REMAINS. BUILT C.1570-1590. THE HOUSE HAD AN INNER COURTYARD AND FRONTS OF 175 FEET LENGTH. THE WING HAS LITTLE OF INTEREST. RED BRICK WITH BLUE DIAPERING. FORMERLY MULLIONED WINDOWS. IS LISTED BUILDING (B5 & B12).
EXCAVATION FOUND A WINGED BUILDING (MARKED ON CAS MAP)(B9) & GARDEROBE, & OTHER BUILDING FOUNDATIONS (B6).
REFERENCE TO REMAINS OF MANSION, IE FISHPONDS, CELLARS, GARDEN TERRACES &C (B1).
NGR TO HOUSE (B3).
Watching brief carried out by AS&C in March 2011 during groundworks for a new tennis court SE of Salden House recorded the remains of an earthwork bank comprising 0.14m-1.2m thick silty clay make-up layers with significant quantities of brick and tile fragments and large limestone blocks, presumably from the Tudor great house or more recent farm buildings (B16).
