Description

Dimensions - Length 19m, Width 12m.
Plan Form - Rectangular.
Grade II. House, the remains of a large house built late C16 for Sir John Fortescue, and mostly demolished 1738-43. Red brick with diaper patterning in blue headers and flanking brick pilasters. Stone mouldings to top of plinth and eaves. Some stone window dressings. Old tile roof, brick chimneys to gables and between right-hand bays. 2 storeys and attic. 3 main bays, ground floor has 3-leaded casements, 2 to left in segmental brick heads, window to right in altered moulded stone surround, first floor has original 3-light windows with moulded stone mullions and transoms and leaded lights. Left window has 3-light leaded fanlight with segmental head. Additional small bay to right has 4-centred brick arch, now blocked but with 3-light moulded stone window and ledged board door, C20 3-light leaded casement to first floor, C20 double garage extension to right. Rear is similar with moulded stone window surrounds to first floor and C19-C20 extensions and conservatory, interior has some C17 panelling. RCHM II p205-6 MON22 (B12).

AVDC Conservation team note that at the far end of the building there is evidence of a triumph-archway, almost wide enough for a carriage. The evidence suggests a relieving brick arch, 3 light stone framed fanlight and a stone plinth and returns below (B15).
