Description

The road was turnpiked in 1791; the term was extended for 20 years in 1813. Penley Hollis and Well End gates were in Oxon until the boundary change in 1896. The accounts record the leasing of tolls for three gates from 1828 but no mention is made of them after 1850 (B1).
