Description

Probable eighteenth or nineteenth century milestone may be missing from B482 opposite Penley Lodge south of Stokenchurch not recorded on Bucks CC Chiltern Milestone Survey in 1995 or on updated Milestones Socity website in 2002. Not on current OS map estimated from ' all historic layers database' . Confirmed by handwritten records of microfiched OSD surveyors drawings (1814) and OSD 1'' (1835). Marlow to Stokenchurch (M) route Bucks County museum number 41 sheet XLI now in Centre for Bucks Studies. On page 5 of notes. Inscription: Stoke 1: Marlow 7: also benchmark on historic map map. Note in B1 that recorded in 1835 as Marlow 8. In same notes under M in red box No information. [Handwritten notes consulted in HER] (B1).
In Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Bucknghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties 2017 this milestone was on The Great Marlow and Stokenchurch Turrnpike Road 1791 p.235 road 18. Now B482 this trust was meant to improve traffic from Marlow to Oxford by improving Marlow to Stokenchurch road now 5 and a half miles in Buckinghamshire. One of 116 modern records out of a posible 230 fom old records according to PG. During WW2 milemarkers were removed or buried for security reasons sometimes not put back in right place or replaced. After the trusts closd in 1880s or 1890s in Bucks standardised metal posts replaced missing milestones on some roads the Milestones Society calls Bucks Pressings with black paint lettering. Between 1791 and 1882 the trust put up 8 milestons of unusual design square base rising to circular cross section mileage shown on upper part. 4 survive today. PG thinks they may bought from another trust and re engrnaved this trust was not as successful as others so income not great. [Copy in HER] (B2)
