Description
ESTATE KNOWN AS HUGHENDEN MANOR IN C16 & MORE USUALLY KNOWN AS ROCKHALLS WAS HELD BY RICHARD WELLESBOURNE AT END C14.BY LATE C16 OWNED BY WIDMERS,WHO HELD UNTIL END C18.ROCKALLS FARM,ON SITE OF FORMER MANSION,CAME INTO POSSESSION OF NEWMAN FAMILY OF BRANDS HOUSE, BEFORE 1862 (B1,B7-8).
The old moated mansion locally known at Rockhalls (B2) was replaced by the present farmhouse (SU 87609570) in the early 19th century. (No trace of moat on available Aps (RAF 1947)) (B1)
The fragmentary remains of a probable moat are centred at SU 87649576, measuring C100.0m EW by 112.0m N-S, and C10.0m wide by 1.5m deep, partly waterfilled, and cut by a road. The central area is disturbed and shows signs of former habitation. According to the owner Mr Vickers, the traditional name is Raqueville Castle, but he could offer no evidence. Published survey (25") revised. (B10)
The area to the north and east of Rockalls Farm containing irregular ground and defined on the north and east by a ditch, would appear to form an enclosure containing outbuildings contemporary with the medieval house. A ditch immediately north of the house may represent part of the moat recorded by Sheahan (B11)
