Description

Dimensions - Length 250cm, Height 45cm.
MR COX...ACCIDENTLY STRUCK UPON THE CROWN OF AN ARCH OF FLINTS WITHOUT MORTAR, ABOUT 250CM LONG, THE SIDE WALLS ABOUT 45CM HIGH (ABOUT THE SAME HEIGHT AS THE ARCH) THE FLOOR QUITE LEVEL...THAT THEREON LAY HUMAN BONES (00:000). THE NEXT DAY THE MAN HAD REMOVED & SOLD THE STONES (B1-2).

An arch of flints was discovered during digging at Deadman Danes Bottom (SU 895960 'Deadmondean Road' OS 6" 1961) in 1828. Measuring about eight feet long with side walls about eighteen inches high (about the same height as the arch), the grave contained parts of a human skeleton and an iron battle axe with a wooden handle.

Another report (a) of this discovery mentions a large stone weighing over one pound and thought to be a personal ornament; this stone and the iron axe head were purchased by Mr J Norris of Hitchenden House for his collection. (See SU 89 SE 31 for similar discovery or another version of the same.) (B1 and B5)

This interesting discovery was made within a quarter of a mile from Deadman Danes Bottom, in the parish of Hughenden, bordering on Penn Wood (SU 9196) (B4)
