Description
VILLAGE MIGRATED FROM OLD CHURCH SITE. SUNKEN ROADS & ENCLOSURES TO S OF CHURCH (B4).
GREATER PART OF DMV PLOUGHED OUT. MIGRATION GIVEN AS REASON FOR DESERTION AT UNKNOWN DATE. STREET PATTERN VISIBLE ON APS (B5).
NGR'S FOR HALLINGES & STOKE MANDEVILLE VERY SIMILAR. THIS IS PROB STOKE MANDEVILLE (B6).
Remains of a deserted village and the demolished St Mary's Church are visible as earthworks. Interpretation of the LiDAR is confused by the presence of mature trees. Banks and ditches are visible, as well what may be demolished masonry at the church site. Possible further remains of the deserted medieval village are visible on LiDAR as diffuse, amorphous earthworks across this field. Too faintly extant to define and map individual tofts, crofts, hollow ways, etc. (B11).
Ditches, possible former boundaries and a subrectangular enclosure of medieval/post medieval and Iron Age/Romano British date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located south of the site of old St Mary’s Church, Stoke Mandeville, and centred at SP 83995 08995. The 1940s aerial photographs show linear ditches crossing a large irregular shaped, pasture field with areas of ridge and furrow earthworks in between some of them; these may be former field boundaries or possible routeways. Field amalgamation has increased the area of this field and arable land use since the mid 20th century has produced cropmarks of a subrectangular enclosure at the western edge of the field, to the rear of Stoke Grove Farm. This enclosure measures approximately 58x59m at its largest. Recorded finds within the field range in date from Iron Age to post medieval in date; the underlying geology is Gault Formation and Upper Greensand Formation Mudstones, with no recorded superficial deposits but aerial photographs show irregular patterns from underlying geology. If any further features such as pits are present they were not clear enough to map individually. This area lies on level ground at the foot of the Chilterns escarpment to the south and is crossed by small watercourses and the soils are freedraining and fertile. The site of a Roman villa is marked on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map approximately 450m to the south (see MBC2848). The northern part of this area has been affected by the construction of the HS2 rail line. (14-27)
