Description

In advance of tree thinning, a survey was undertaken to identify archaeological features which might be affected by machine movements. The survey noted a second enclosure, larger than the scheduled enclosure to the north. Also a wealth of quarries, saw pits (roughly 4 x 2m dug along the contour with a bank built up on the down hill side to create a level platform for a 2 man pit saw), charcoal hearths (perhaps from post WW II felling), wood banks and lynchets, and the sunken hollow way to the east which forms the historic boundary between Bucks and Herts (Mercia and Wessex). It was noted that some parts of the plantation are now very dense and additional features may have been missed (B1).
