Description

Suggested medieval settlement from fieldwalking finds: 11 Saxo-Norman sherds including St Neots; Medieval pottery sherds: 90 rims; 72 bases; 87 glazed sherds; 7 handles; 819 body sherds. Also finds from earlier periods (see :01) (B1).

Drainage ditches or possible boundary ditches of possible medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located at the site of Little Marsh Farm, Great and Little Kimble cum Marsh and centred at SP 80851 09422. This area of ditches is to the south and east of the site of Little Marsh Farm and the coprolite workings with tramway and washing area (see MBC11135). These activities may have affected any earlier remains of settlement at the site as there are hardly any finds recorded within the coprolite extraction area (assuming this area was included in the fieldwalking area). Some of the ditches appear to be continuations of boundaries and or trackways that extend from the site of the farm. Two fields, immediately to the south of the site of the farm, form a sub oval area crossed by a stream where most of the finds are recorded; these range in date from late Iron Age to post medieval but the majority are medieval and include Anglo Saxon pottery found during fieldwalking. It is not possible to date this site from the evidence available to this project. (2-4)
