Description
Dimensions - Width 75m, Length 210m.
Large red brick building of 1852: architects, Wyatt & Brandon. Opened on 17th January 1853. Fire-proof construction with iron roofs & floors. Chapel on 1st floor. 260 patients in 1859 (B1).

Enlarged 1892, 1902 &C (B3).
Later became St John's Hospital. The S part, running E-W with two wings at each end projecting N and S, is by T H Wyatt and D Brandon, 1850-3. Red brick, Italianate, and remarkably reticent. The entrance of stone, with the Italianate ('debased') tower centrally placed, is later. The buildings were constructed with iron floor joists and iron roofs. New Admission Unit by Gollins, Melvin, Ward & Partners, not yet completed [1960]. The design is cruciform. In the two long arms wards and rooms, in the two short arms Treatment Rooms, Dining Room, Kitchen, etc. The two-storeyed ward block is still to be built. The rest single-storeyed.
