Description

Mid 19th century grounds and gardens of former County Lunatic Asylum. It was tended by the inmates. The site has subsequently been redeveloped. Described by Sheahan as pleasure grounds, the first edition 6" OS map clearly shows the layout (B11).

Evidence of footpaths and landscaping assosciated with the County Lunatic Asylum garden were identified during trial trench evaluation. Field drains within the garden were found to contain broken fragments of plates and cups from the asylum. Possibly the only surviving examples of marked tablewares from the institution (B15)
