Monument record 0578801001 - VERNEY JUNCTION STATION

Summary

Site of railway station on the Buckinghamshire Railway, opened in 1850 and closed in 1968. On 23 September 1868 the station was linked with the Great Western Railway at Alyesbury when a link was opened between the two stations, known as the Aylesbury and Buckinghamshire Railway. Underground services arrived here on 1st July 1891 when the Metropolitan introduced a local service from Aylesbury. Through trains between Verney Junction and Baker Street followed on 1st January 1897. Metropolitan services between Verney Junction and Aylesbury closed on 4th July 1936.

Description

STATION OPENED SEPT 1868 WITH AYLESBURY-BUCKINGHAM RAILWAY AS JUNCTION WITH BLETCHLEY-BANBURY & OXFORD LINES. BECAME N TERMINUS OF METROPOLITAN RAILWAY JULY 1891. CLOSED 1 JAN 1968 (PLANS, ILLUS)(B3-4).

After the Metropolitan extended to Aylesbury in 1892, Verney Junction became busy and was famous for beautiful flowers and station ornaments (B9).
