Plan Form - L SHAPED
Fragmentary homestead moat at Bell Leys Farm (almost certainly the L-shaped feature shown on OS 6" 1958 at SP 86841920). (B1).
L-SHAPED FEATURE AT NGR (B2).
EVALUATION OF MOATED SITE SHOWED THAT THE SURVIVING L-SHAPED POND IS PART OF A LARGER FEATURE. NO EVIDENCE FOR MEDIEVAL ACTIVITY OR SETTLEMENT WAS FOUND, SO MAYBE THE 'MOAT' WAS A FISHPOND OR ORNAMENTAL POND OF POST-MEDIEVAL DATE (REPORT)(B4).
Two water-filled moat-like arms c 50.0m long by 8.0m wide exist on the edge of high ground at Nup End. They cannot have formed a regular moat as the ground falls away to the SW. No trace of a building was found within, and the feature probably represents an artificial drainage pond. Published survey (25") correct (B5).
