  • WATERMILL? (13th Century - 1200 AD to 1299 AD)

Description

IN 1264-5, CIRENCESTER ABBEY MADE A LIFE GRANT OF (BOYCOTT?) MILL TO BIDDLESDEN ABBEY (B1).
NGR TO PAPER MILL SPINNEY, A POSSIBLE SITE OF BOYCOTT MILL (B2).
FOR AN ALTERNATIVE SITE, SEE CASS 05214.
The National Trust Survey of Stowe undertaken in 1989 makes reference to a mill at Boycott whose exact location is unknown. It suggests that Oxford Water may have developed from a mill race. But is thought that bricks found in this area possibly relate to a earlier sluice system for the 18th century lake and that the actual site is likely to be on the main brook to the south towards Dadford (B4).
