Summary

Documentary history of medieval and post-medieval manor of Grove, also known as Seyton's Manor. Medieval homestead moat containing a 16th of 17th century ruined dovecote. The moat is surounds a sub oval island measuring 70m by 46m. The moat is 16m wide and 2m deep with an extensoin to the northe 6m by 24m which possibly served as a fishpond. There is also an outer bank to the north and east sides 6m wide by 0.5m high which is thought to be upcast from moat. This is the possible site of a manor dating from before 1166. The island contains the remains of a square flint and brick dovecote, it is 6m wide with walls 3m high. This is possibly 16th century or more likly associated with a 17th century house. Scheduled.

Description

SEEMS PART OF HONOUR OF WOLVERTON & BECAME KNOWN AS SEYTON'S MANOR OR MANOR OF GROVE BEFORE 1166. HELD BY SEYTON FAMILY C.1262-1446. VERNEYS HELD FOR ABOUT A CENTURY FROM 1459. 1798 SOLD TO SIR JOHN RUSSELL & FROM THEN LINKED TO CHEQUERS. 1629 SEATONS MANOR & GROVE LANDS MARKED APPROX AT NGR (B4).

A pear-shaped moat, destroyed at the south end (B5). Plan (B3).
The dovecote (shown on plan) is possibly 16th century (B4).
A pear-shaped near-dry, homestead moat centred at SP 8357 0807 measuring, overall, 95.0m N-S by 40.0 to 70.0m transversely. The ditch is from 12.0 to 16.0m in width and up to 3.0m deep. There is a low outer bank along the E side. At the N end is a possible original narrow causewayed entrance. The SW side has been filled in and a roadway crosses giving access to a modern house with the moat. Here also is a dovecote at SP 8356 0808, 6.0m square, built of flints with brick dressings. There is a low doorway in the W side. Within, the four walls are covered with brick built nesting boxes. The building is roofless and disused and in poor condition.
