Net sinker

A term applied to a perforated stone or terracotta object, sometimes because they cannot immediately be identified as anything else. On waterside sites, such as the sixteenth century examples from the River Ouse in Thornton, this interpretation may well be correct. Possible Saxon net sinkers were also found in excavations at the former cement works in Pitstone.
