Flange

A transverse flattening of an edge. It is most commonly used for the sides of a bronze weapon, which are flattened to hold a grip or haft of a different material. An external ledge round a pottery bowl is often given the same name. One example of a flanged axe in Buckinghamshire was found at Brickfields in Hazlemere.
