Hammerstone

A hammerstone is a fist-sized hard stone tool that was used in prehistoric times to knock flakes from flint, to create tools and implements. Hammerstones can often be recognised by their rounded, smooth shape and the appearance of small circular marks on the surface caused by the action of percussion.

Hammerstones are often dated to the Neolithic period. One of this date known from Buckinghamshire was found at Chequers Manor Farm in Stokenchurch and some are found in the Thames. A Bronze Age example was found at the Orchard Site on Walton Road in Aylesbury and medieval example was found at Ivinghoe Aston.
