Pit
The pits found on archaeological sites and of many kinds. Some were storage pits or silos; others were rubbish dumps or borrow pits from which clay and building daub were extracted. In the early days of archaeology, when excavators rarely distinguished post-holes or traces of timber buildings, storage and rubbish pits were often misinterpreted as pit dwellings.
Pits can be found on all types of sites of all periods. Middle Iron Age storage and rubbish pits were excavated at Danesfield Camp in Medmenham; a Roman pit was found in a pipeline trench dug at Bury Farm, Amersham and medieval pits were revealed at Hunter Street in Buckingham.
