Southlands Farm is a timber-framed 16th c house, considerably restored and altered. It has a moat fed by the Alderbourne (B1)
The timber framed house is outside the moat which is waterfilled and well preserved except for the NE arm which has been converted into an ornamental pond (centred TQ 03788464). The enclosed area is a small cultivated field, and a pond in the SW part may be the remains of a fishpond (B9).
'Southlands', a private residence, is a complete rebuild of the 1920s, re-using `Tudor' brick and timbers. Not outstanding. The gatehouse on the NE side is 16th c but much restored (B11). On the SW side of the house a connected series of narrow brick-revetted channels of ornamental water probably follow the course of the former moat, but two parallel and non-landscaped water stretches shown on the OS 6" at TQ 03758460 may be the remains of the SW arm and a fishpond. An estate map of Denham c 1845 shows a house and outbuildings now occupied by the rebuilt house. Also shown is a rectangular moat, complete and waterfilled with two ponds within the enclosed area which is devoid of structures. Published survey (25") revised (B10).
