Description

Plan Form - LINEAR
SUGGESTED ANGLO-SAXON CHARTER BOUNDARY OF MONKS RISBOROUGH (B2-3).
NGRs based on Arnold Baines' suggested interpretation of the boundary.

(SP 812044) Monastery (NR) (Remains of) (B25).
'Monks Risborough' derives its name from the Monks of Christ Church, Canterbury, to whom the estate was given about 993 AD. At Domesday the Manor belonged to Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury, and had formerly been held by Algar, the standard-bearer of Christ Church Canterbury. ONB destroyed, and no evidence found to say what the OS publication referred to. The 'Remains' seem likely to have been those of the old Manor House of Monks Risborough (B26). Listed as a doubtful Benedictine priory (B27).
The only indication of a former Manor House is an isolated derelict stone-built dovecote at SP 81180443. The enclosure map of c 1834 shows no other structures in this area which is named Dove House Close (B28).
