Description

Little sign of where old village lay, though irregularities in paddocks near church visible & others at N end of park (B5).
Some houses closes etc visible in aerial photos (B6).
A few probable house platforms visible to SE of track between Middle & Yeat Farms; also some amorphous earthworks in field centred SP6850 1580 (B7).
Map of lands belonging to Richard Grenville in 1649 shows the layout of the closes of the village. Two closes with cottages labelled as 'Fran Hunt' and 'Greene' lie to the southern perimeter of the garden south of the South Pavilion of Wotton House. 'Whites Greene part of the Common' is on the eastern side of this garden (B11).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by John Moore Heritage Services in September 2007 within the kitchen garden south of South Pavilion, revealed traces of medieval and early post-medieval occupation including a possible hollow way, pond, property boundary ditch, pit and cultivation soil. See report for detail (B12).
Several deposits were identified in August 2008 following groundworks for the new tennis court, some of which may equate with deposits seen during the previous evaluation on site (B13).
