Description

NOV 914 EDWARD THE ELDER (899-925) BUILT BURHS ON BOTH BANKS OF OUSE AT BUCKINGHAM TO CONTROL ROUTES TO NORTHAMPTON, BEDFORD & OUSE VALLEY. LOST ITS MILITARY SIGNIFICANCE AFTER 942 (B1,B6). MENTIONED IN BURGHAL HIDAGE, C10 (B4,B7). 2 MAPS SHOW POSSIBLE BURH DEFENCE LOCATIONS (B8). NGR TO PRESENT TOWN CENTRE. Discussion of Buckingham's hidage, suggestion that Buckingham added to Burghal Hidage list after 914 and consideration of topography (B10). Detailed discussion of location and layout of burh (B11).
