Description

Moat & fishpond surrounds house. East arm formed by River Colne (B4.)
Not a moat, but ornamental watercourse. Fishpond survives (B6).
Free fishing in the Colne at Denham was attached to the manor in C17 & C18 (B3).
NGR to west arm of watercourse.
Assessment of documentary evidence for moats, fishponds and ornamental watercourses at Denham Court (B13).
Evaluation trial trenching and augering carried out by Oxford Archaeology in March 2011 in advance of proposed construction of a new office building located the bank of a former watercourse, shown as a formal pond on historic mapping, which had been infilled with modern demolition debris, possibly in the 1980s. To the east of the former pond a sequence of garden soils 0.85m thick overlay deposits of alluvium 1.06m-2.3m thick intersperesed with organic and peaty lenses with well-preserved plant material and land snails, suggestive of slow flowing, low energy water within former palaochannels.
