Description
HOLLOW WAY & BOUNDARY BANK SEPARATE 2 AREAS OF RIDGE & FURROW, CONNECTING WITH 1 OF THE STREETS OF THE DMV (B3).
Scheduled in June 2013. See Scheduling documents for detail (B4).
SP 77511386-SP 77701366. Not a Civil War earthwork, but a Medieval hollow-way and boundary bank, separating two areas of rig-and-furrow, and connecting with one of the streets of Eythrope DMV (SP 71 SE 1) (See St Joseph Aps). The "rectangular enclosure" at SP 77651387 appears as a platform, 0.5m high. It does not seem to be defensive and is probably a farm steading. Surveyed at 1:2500 (B16).
A rapid examination of air photography (B13) shows ther hollow way/boundary bank earthwork in 1969 (B14).
[Former interpretation from NRHE] A curved embankment, approximately 400 yds in length (B7) at Eythrope, and centred at SP 776138. There are breaks along its length (B10) which could be embrasures for guns. Possible a Civil War defensive earthwork. On its north side is a rectangular enclosure, possibly a battery. Eythorp was held by Parliamentary troops in 1644-5 (B17).
NRHE Insert 1999, update 2000 (B15).
