A medieval/post medieval deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across fields SE of Eythrope House and centred at SP 77412 13851, the medieval settlement comprise a range of features such as building platforms, crofts, enclosures and trackways relating to the occupation of the site extending across an area about 318 metres N-S and 285 metres W-E. A sinuous hollow way is the main street of the settlement, bisecting it through the centre WNW-E. To the N are a complex of interconnected parallel and perpendicular ditches that form contiguous rectilinear enclosures ranging in size from 17 x 6 metres to 67 x 36 metres . To the S of the hollow way are further ditched enclosures, some rectilinear and other irregularly shaped. To the south and east is a boundary a ditch about 2m wide that marks the boundary between settlement and fields:. The ditch extends E in a large curve for 320 metres, before turning sharply S for 45 metres, then SW for 325 metres and W for a final 93 metres, enclosing and abutting medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation blocks, with an earthwork bank along about half its length on the inner side. On the north part of the boundary ditch and bank enclosing the field system, the internal bank is broken into numerous small sections, and there is evidence of a second, slighter ditch to the south of the bank. This internal ditch is also visible on the south boundary, presumably for drainage and flood alleviation from the nearby river only metres to the S (5-9).
DMV Eythrope at SP 774138, a pattern of streets and crofts visible on A/Ps (b10, b7). There is some historical documentation but the period of desertion is not known (b11). The field-name 'Old Town' is centred at SP 773139 (b1).
The remains of Eythrope DMV are visible in a flat pasture field as a series of depressions nowhere more than 0.8m deep forming an irregular pattern of connecting trackways and streets. There are no house platforms visible. The village is surrounded by fields of rig and furrow, the limits of the village being marked by stronger holloways and field banks. Surveyed at 1:2500 (B12).
A rapid examination of air photography shows the earthworks of the Deserted Medieval Village (B13 and B14).
Scheduled. For the designation record of this site please see the National Heritage List for England (B4).
