Description

SHRINKAGE HERE IN RECENT YEARS. EARTHWORKS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS (B4).
RECENT DESERTION/SHRINKAGE - OF 7 IN 1921 ONLY 3 REMAIN (B3).

An area of possible shrunken settlement and extractive pits of medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located at Sedrup, Stone with Bishopstone and Hartwell, and centred at SP 80088 11568. Earthworks of possible building platforms and boundaries can be seen on aerial photographs and lidar visualisations around a large extractive pit at the centre. The extractive pit is post likely post medieval in date and is irregular shaped; it measures 120x79m at its largest with earthworks of banks and ditches surrounding it. These may be from activities associated with this land use or from earlier occupation at the site. On historic mapping settlement appears to be on the edge of a common, open area or green with a pond at the centre. Underlying geology is Portland Sand Formation, Limestone and Calcareous Sandstone, and Superficial Deposits of Alluvium are recorded across the centre of the site from the north west to the south east. Two areas of ridge and furrow earthworks fit in to the earthworks of boundaries, possible platforms and trackways of the settlement. The settlement is labelled Sedrup on Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 maps and Southwarp on the Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing of Aylesbury. (8-11)

A medieval deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields between Sedrup Farm and Cally Farm and centred at SP 79963 11567, the earthworks comprise five parallel linear ditches up to 2 metres wide that extend SW-NE between 73 and 135 metres, each spaced about 8 metres apart. Adjacent to these is sinuous ditch that may have been a trackway or hollow way that extends NW towards Cally Farm to an area of two rectilinear platforms, one about 40 x 30 metres and the other 26 metres square, bounded by ditches. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, most of the earthworks remain extant (12-15).
