Description

Dimensions - Length 8000cm, Width 600cm, Height 20cm.
Plan Form - Linear.
LENGTH OF AGGER, DESCRIBED AS A PACKED STONE CAMBERED ROAD FOUND C1964 (B1).
EXCAVATION, INVOLVING A SECTION THROUGH THE AGGER, CARRIED OUT AUG 1977 (BRIEF REPORT ON CAS FILE) (B3).
POSSIBLY VIATORES ROAD 162 (B2).
LOCATED C250M W OF BRIGHTMOOR FARM (B1). SEE ALSO CASS 02034.
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by John Moore Heritage Services in May 2025 in advance of demolition of existing buildings and construction of a new house, revealed a section of the Roman road surface and a single shallow undated pit in Trench 1. Trench 2 contained 3 large Roman ditches and intercutting gullies, oriented on broadly the same alignment as the Roman road and interpreted as field boundary ditches. Late 2nd to late 4th century Roman pottery, slag fragments, animal bone and a possible quern stone fragment were recovered. See report for detail (B4).
