Description

OLD MANOR HOUSE WAS PALACE & RESIDENCE OF BISHOPS OF LINCOLN, & TILL MIDDLE OF (18TH) CENTURY RETAINED ITS ANCIENT CHARACTER OF FEUDAL MAGNIFICENCE. FROM AN IMPERFECT PLAN IN MY POSSESSION...IT WAS OF LARGE PROPORTIONS (B2).
COVERED LARGE AREA, & GALLERY, 120FT LONG HAD WHARTON FAMILY PORTRAITS (B1).

An extensive moated palace or manor house and chapel with gardens commanding "a pleasant view of the church and village" of Wooburn. The house was pulled down in 1750 and the stables converted to a dwelling (B2).

Wooburn House (SU 91358820) 18th C on site of earlier house (Bishops Palace) (B10).

No trace of the 'palace' or chapel survives and the main body of 18th C Wooburn House has been demolished in recent years and the area developed.

The 'moat', probably refers to the ornamented stretch of the River Wye which runs SE and SW of this area (B9)
