Summary

Lower to Middle Palaeolithic flint artefacts found in Station Pit, Taplow - Five Lower Palaeolithic handaxes and a flake were found from Gibbons Pit. Gibbons Pit was probably the western extension of Station Pit. Palaeoliths were found at the site by the Treachers in the 1930s. The objects were found in an area of Taplow Gravel geology.

Description

PREVIOUS TO 1889 SEVERAL ABRADED PALAEOLITHIC IMPLEMENTS WERE FOUND IN THE LOW GRAVEL NEAR TAPLOW STATION BY RUTLAND & OTHERS (B2).
4 HAND AXES DESCRIBED & SKETCHED FROM GIBBONS PIT (B4).
5 HAND AXES & 1 FLAKE DESCRIBED (B5).
Site mentioned in English Rivers Palaeolithic Survey (B17-18).




(SU 9182) Four Palaeolithic handaxes from Gibbons Pit Taplow, are in Oxford University Museum. (1)

Wymer gives 5 handaxes (one broken) and a flake from Gibbons Pit. Gibbons Pit was probably the western extension of Station Pit, or the one now used as a corporation tip, at approx SU 917816. All in Oxford Univ Mus (Treacher Colln) (B5).
