Description

ARCHED & VAULTED CELLARS OF FORMER MANSION NEAR GREAT BARLEY END FARM REMAIN (B2 (1862)).
GREAT BARLEY END FARM NOW CALLED DUNCOMBE FARM; STEPS LEAD DOWN FROM ITS SUMMERHOUSE TO 3 LARGE VAULTED CELLARS, THE W OF WHICH IS FULL OF WATER AND MAY HAVE SERVED AS A WATER SUPPLY TO THE HOUSE. OWNER SAYS FURTHER PASSAGES EXISTED BUT HAVE BEEN BRICKED OFF AS DANGEROUS. DATE PROBABLY C17-EARLY C18, AS ARE GARDEN WALLS, WHICH INCLUDE AN IMPRESSIVE GATEWAY ON THE E SIDE (B4).
