Description

10 Neolithic pits found in 1997 during excavations by Oxford Archaeology in advance of construction of the Maidenhead, Windsor and Eton Flood Allevation Scheme (the Jubilee River). The pits were towards the eastern end of the excavation area, in two main clusters of 3 and 4 pits, and with 3 more isolated pits. Radio-carbon dates of 3330-2910 BC and 3340-2910 BC were obtained from hazelnut shells in the fills of two of the pits. The pit fills contained significant amounts of pottery, worked flint, small amounts of animal bone and charred plant remains. See report for detail, and illustrations (B12).
