Description

Relocated railway station building. In 1851 the London and North Western Railway opened its own line to Oxford from Bletchley (Bucks), and brought in the engineering firm of Fox and Henderson, contractors for the celebrated Great Exhibition building (Crystal Palace) in London, to build the iron and glass train shed for their station, which stood next to the Great Western Railway building on Rewley Road, Oxford. Fox and Henderson used identical iron castings to those employed in the Crystal Palace, and a similar ridge and furrow roof structure. Later used by the LMS and British Rail, it was last used for its original purpose in 1951. The station was in use as a Tyre Services Centre when the site was acquired by the University of Oxford for the Said Business School. The need to relocate the Grade II* Listed building saw the Quainton Railway Society accepting it for use as a visitor centre at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre. Dismantling work commenced in January 1999 with the metal structure taken to F J Thornton's Wolverhampton foundry for assessment and repair before re-erection began at Quainton. The long lost porte-cochere (carriage stand) was recreated on the front of the station which was extend to the rear to enlarge the train shed and provide new visitor facilities. The centre opened in April 2002 (B4-5).
