A hillfort Iron Age date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Wendover Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 88232 07997. The hillfort is visible as cleared grassland surrounded by woodland with a 20th century covered reservoir at the centre. Lidar visualisations show earthworks of the ramparts and field systems beyond, in the woodland. The enclosure is approximately 490x210m at it’s longest and widest. The ramparts are not clear northern end of the hillfort and historic mapping shows a farm, Calloway Farm, built in to the area of the fort; this farm has since been demolished and only occasional (frog-less) bricks are visible on the ground in the area (site visited in February 2024). Modern land use of the wider area is woodland and recreation managed by Forestry England. (19-22)
(SP882080) Camp (NR) (B23).
A contour camp in imperfect condition, on Boddington Hill; it occupies a striking position at the end of a ridge. The defences consist of a single rampart and ditch, the strongest part of which, that across the neck, has been obliterated by farm buildings etc. The rampart on the east is 13ft high and 51ft wide, and the ditch 3ft deep and 45ft wide; on the west the ditch is obliterated. There is a gap at the south-west of the work, but the original entrance must have been on the north-east (B3).
In 1964 a section was cut through the bank and ditch under the direction of F/O J A W Burden and Fl/Lt J Jeffers, when an occupation layer containing IA 'A' sherds was found immediately underlying the rampart, at SP88050780 (B3 and B24).
Assigned by Thomas to a period c1st-2nd C., B.C.(B25)
IA contour hillfort as described. Forestry Commission land, site under coniferous and deciduous trees, but well preserved. Published 1:2500 survey revised.
In 1967, part of a bronze knife, or dagger, was found on the surface at SP 881079 and reported by R Franklin (b26).
Mr R Franklin could not be traced, but Bucks Co Museum lists other finds within the enclosed area; including a hollow flint scraper found by Mr J A Hume (Acc No 56156) and further IA 'A' sherds from exposed rampart areas. (Acc Nos 128:61 41:19) (B27).
Iron Age pottery, and animal bone were found following the uprooting of a tree, by T Champion(B28).
SP 882 080. Boddington Hill. Listed in gazetteer as a univallate hillfort covering 7.0ha (B29).
