Site visit in 1997 highlighted discrepancy in the published dates given for the discovery of the Bronze Age Cremation urn. According to the archives of the Stoke Poges Golf Club, the golf course was commenced in 1908 and finished in 1909. Hence construction would have been finished by January 1911 when the burial was said to have been found during the construction of the 13th hole (B10).
The site survives to 2m high and has a well-preserved ditch. Unfortunately it was heavily impacted by BMX and motorcyles riders. In Spring 1991, followng a large scale contour survey by BCM, the badly eroded areas were protected with extra topsoil and Techturf (B11).
Assessment of historical and landscape context included in management plan for Stoke Park (B12).
There is a tumulus at the SW corner of Stoke Park (now leases as Stoke Poges Golf course) (B13)
In 1911 an inverted cinerary urn,LBA(a), was found a foot down in gravel when a bunker was being made at the 13th hole. It is now in the County Museum (B1), Acc No 73.11 (B14)
At SU 9703 8222 is a bowl barrow, turf and bush covered, located in a recreation ground at the summit of a gentle S facing slope. It measures c29.0m in overall diameter and 2.5m high with a ditch extant on the NW and SW sides, maximum depth c 0.3m.
All traces of the former golf course has been removed. The Secretary of Stoke Poges Golf Club, Commander Wates, is not in possession of a plan of the original layout, but states from memory that the 13th hole was in the vicinity of the mound. He was unaware of the urn's discovery.
