- BOUNDARY DITCH (Medieval to Post-Medieval - 1066 AD? to 1798 AD?)
Description
Geophysical survey carried by Magnitude Survey in June and September 2024 in advance of a proposed solar farm development, identified a curving NE-SW negative linear anomaly in Area 6, shown as part of the boundary of Whaddon Chase in the 1813 OS surveyor's draft drawing (B2).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in October and November 2024 revealed the boundary ditch in Trenches 18 and 19. The ditch (unexcavated in Trench 19) was 3.1m wide and 0.54m deep with gently sloping sides and a flat base and two sandy clay and silty clay fills. The main (upper) fill produced occasional flecks of charcoal, fragments of possible Roman tile, and small fragments of fired clay. See report for detail (B3).
