  • VICARAGE? (16th Century to 18th Century - 1500 AD? to 1799 AD?)

Description

Excavations by the National Trust in August 2019 to test the results from earlier ground penetrating radar survey, found stone footings of a substantial 16th or 17th century century building approx 5mX5m, with a cellar and late 17th or early 18th century demolition debris, tentatively suggested as the remains of the vicarage. A terrier of 1700 described the vicarage as a stone building of 6 bays with a cellar and a lean-to; by 1733 it was described as 'so decayed that it is dangerous to live in'. See report for detail (B12).
