Description

POSSIBLE HOUSE SITES (IE VILLAGE SHRINKAGE) NOTED ON AERIAL PHOTO (B1).
FIELD VISIT: A FAIRLY LIKELY HOUSE PLATFORM CENTRED AT SP 7798 0947. OTHER FIELDS MUCH DISTURBED BY QUARRYING. LITTLE EVIDENCE FOR ANY SUBSTANTIAL VILLAGE SHRINKAGE; MERELY 1 OR 2 HOUSE PLATFORMS (B2).

Possible boundary and drainage ditches and possible building platforms of medieval/post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the north east side of the road through Ford, Dinton-with-Ford and Upton, and centred at SP 77885 09380. Linear ditches and earthworks could be boundary ditches or drainage ditches outside the settlement at Ford. They are visible on historical aerial photographs and lidar visualisations. The southern end of the area is on Gault Formation Mudstone where soils would be heavier and this seems to have influenced the features that are visible. The northern part of the area is underlain by Lower Greensand Group Sandstone and Purbeck Group Formation Limestone which will give freer draining soils. (4-8)
