Description

Suggested that the garden wall constructed after 1779, when Wilton Park was bought by Josiah Du Pre and remodelling of the house was undertaken. The brickwork of the wall suggests a late 18th century to 19th century construction style. Originally part of a pair of gardens, surviving wall farming the boundary of the northern garden, trapezoidal in shape. Walls constructed in red brick in a Flemish bond, using lime mortar. Upper 10 courses are later, constructed in an English bond. Interior walls are generally plain. External walls have buttresses which have been extended with the increased height of the wall. Nails hammered into mortar joints, likely for securing plants, but no formal fittings. North wall has been heavily truncated, much of the central section has been lost. East wall remains with 2 inserted openings. One to the north near the bunker and one to the south. The southern wall has the central section missing. West wall is largely intact with 2 openings. The northern opening has an arched lintel of brick. This is an original feature but with modifications and appears to have been the main garden entrance (B12).
