Description

A Second World War Royal Air Force camp is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields on the northeast corner of Tingewick Woods and centred at SP 65917 31865, Site No.2 is an accommodation camp for nearby RAF Finmere, comprising a sentry box, officers’ quarters, sergeants’ quarters, airmens’ barracks, and separate ablutions and latrine blocks for officers, senior non-commissioned officers and other ranks, accessed by a network of pathways. Seven earth-covered air raid shelters are distributed across the camp. Between 1947 and 1961, all of the camp buildings have been demolished, though the concrete hut platforms and paths remain visible. The earth-covered air raid shelters have also been levelled and demolished. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, some of the concrete building platforms appear to remain intact (1-9).
